About the city

With a metropolitan population of over a million, Benghazi is a major seaport and a long-standing centre of trade, education and administration in Libya. It grew from an ancient Greek settlement and has been shaped over the centuries by Greek, Roman, Arab, Ottoman and Italian influences, all of which are still visible in the city's fabric.

Today it is home to several universities and research institutions, making it a fitting setting for an international academic conference.
